Many temples were constructed in Sambo Prey Kuk during the reign of King Isanavarman I (AD 616-635) in the 7th century. The temples are built from solid brick, laterite, and sandstone, and adorned with exquisite bas-reliefs. Notable architectural features include sandstone lintels, pillars, and door frames. To date, around 140 temples have been discovered within the surrounding forest. The main temple group, Prasat Sambor, is dedicated to Gambhireshvara, one of Shiva’s many forms. Despite their age, several of the structures still showcase intricate carvings, although many are now in various states of disrepair, covered by vegetation.
