Evening Briefing:
The tour starts with an evening briefing at 7:00 PM at your hotel in Banlung. You’ll meet your guide and fellow travelers, go over the itinerary, and ensure everyone is prepared for the journey. This briefing is essential to cover the final details and expectations for the tour.

Day 1: Banlung - Veun Sai - Gibbon Research Station

8:30 AM: Pickup from your hotel in Banlung. Depart for Veun Sai town, located 40 km north.
Morning: Upon arrival in Veun Sai, you’ll have time to purchase any last-minute items before crossing the Sesan River on a local ferry.
Once across, we check into the conservation area and meet with the Community-based Ecotourism Team. We then catch motos to I Tub village, a Laotian community halfway to the research station. Lunch can be done on the way or at the station.
12:30 PM: Arrive at the gibbon research station and meet the station chief, researchers, and your gibbon guide. You will be introduced to the facilities and have time to relax and settle in.
3:00 PM: Begin a short walk through the savannah. Spot local trees, wildlife tracks, and signs such as sun bear claw marks or deer footprints. You may also see various local bird species.
6:45 PM: Early dinner at the station. After dinner, get an early night to prepare for the early start the next day.

Accommodation: Veun Sai-Siem Pang Conservation Station (basic room)

Day 2: Gibbon Spotting and Return to Banlung

3:15 AM: Early rise to prepare for gibbon spotting.
4:00 AM: Hike along a small trail through the dark jungle towards the gibbon habitat, approximately 45 minutes away. The goal is to reach the spot before dawn to hear the gibbons’ early morning calls.
Sunrise: As the sun rises, the northern yellow-cheeked gibbons begin to sing. You’ll wait for the gibbon guide to identify the call of a habituated family of gibbons, and then follow the guide to observe the group as they go about their morning routine. If conditions are right, you can get as close as 15 meters to the gibbons, offering excellent opportunities for photos.
10:00 AM: Return to the research station for brunch. Afterward, pack up and prepare for the journey back.
Late Morning: Leave the station on motos, taking a different trail back through the jungle. You’ll stop again at I Tub village and eventually cross the Sesan River by ferry, returning to Veun Sai town.
3:00 PM: Arrival back in Banlung, marking the end of the tour.

Nareth and her team are fantastic! We were there to build houses in the morning and they developed a custom afternoon itinerary that really helped us maximize our time in the area. They were all personable, easy to work with, responsive and flexible. Our guide Happy gave interesting insights into the local culture. The restaurant picks were spot on and showed the variety of local cuisine. The various sights we visited showed an interesting and diverse range of culture with something for everyone.
